Species: Elk

Card Text Back: American Elk, Colorado - These permanent residents of Colorado stand nearly five feet tall at the shoulder and weigh as much as 1,100 lbs. at maturity. They are most often sighted at dawn and dusk in mountain areas. Originally plains animals, Elk were killed in great numbers by cattlemen to protect grazing lands in the 1880s and 1890s.
