Card Text Back: Merlin (Falco columbarius) - A resident mainly of the northern moorland and marshes in Britain, the Merlin's numbers have declined here in the last twenty years or so. The smallest European falcon, it is a dashing hunter, twisting and turning on long narrow wings to follow the flight of the small birds which form its chief prey, and bringing them down with an outstretched foot. In winter the Merlin disperses widely, and its numbers are increased by visitors from Iceland and Continental Europe. - Length - male (11 ins. (28 cm) female 12-14 ins (32cm)
